Much of what we do to take good care of our teeth is simply a matter of habit. Begun early enough, most of have a routine of brushing our teeth first thing in the morning and before we go to bed, without even thinking about it – it’s a habit, and a great one for our dental and overall health. And for most of us, flossing is part of our daily habitual routine, as is visiting the dentist twice a year.

Unfortunately, a lot of things we do that might seem like good habits can also fall into the category of bad habits when it comes to our oral health. Here are a few good/bad habits you might have:

dental careWater in a glass

It’s good to drink lots of water, but bad if you’re chewing the ice in water and other favorite drinks. That’s because chewing ice can do serious damage in your mouth, cracking and fracturing teeth and dental work.

100% juice

There’s a lot of sugar in juice, even pure juice, and sugar can always put your teeth in peril. Citrus juice in particular can break down your enamel. So rinse your teeth thoroughly to when you drink juice to rinse away sugar and dilute acidity. And it might be a better habit to get your fruit from fruit.

Brushing your teeth

Teeth should be brushed for about two minutes using a soft-bristled or electric toothbrush, once in the morning and once at night. But they should always be brushed gently, not hard or vigorously. And brushing too often can be irritating to your mouth and gums.

Fluoride use

Most everyone agrees that fluoride is good for our teeth, and toothpaste and mouthwash both supply beneficial amounts for our teeth. For children, an accumulation of fluoride in their bones can help strengthen their permanent teeth, before they even develop. But too much can cause teeth stains, spots and pits.
