How to Maximize the Life of your Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain Veneers | Atlanta GAPorcelain veneers are dental applications that can be used in just about every situation. These ultra-thin sheets can disguise crooked teeth, gaps between two front teeth, discoloration, chips, cracks, and more. Because of their versatility, porcelain veneers are a popular cosmetic option for many people. This treatment also requires a bit of an investment, due to its elective nature and lack of insurance coverage. Knowing that you have put good money towards a great smile, you will want to know what you can do to make your veneers last the full extent of their life span.

Dental porcelain is incredibly durable, not like the porcelain china your grandmother brought out for holiday meals. Being that these oral fixtures are made to replicate natural enamel, there is very little that must be done to keep them looking authentically attractive. There are, however, a few ways that veneers could be damaged or worn down. To maximize your veneers, we suggest:

  • Keep a good hygiene practice.

There are tiny margins where veneers are bonded to the front of your tooth or teeth. Plaque and bacteria can accumulate here if you are not mindful about brushing and flossing. Also, veneers cover only the front portion of the tooth, so plaque and tartar buildup may occur on the back surface or sides that are difficult to reach. Decay around a veneer could shorten its lifespan.

In addition to brushing and flossing daily, hygiene should be followed up with routine dental checkups and cleanings. Knowing your dental history and the fact that you have veneers, our hygienist will use specific technique and instruments to clean around these applications in order to preserve their integrity.

  • Use your teeth for chewing only.

If you chew on hard objects, there is a high likelihood that your natural enamel will be damaged. Teeth are tools for chewing, and that is all. This remains a solid truth even after veneers are placed over enamel. Though durable, veneers are not intended to strengthen the existing tooth structure. If you bite on ice or pen caps, your nails, or you open packages with your teeth, you are placing an earlier end date on your beautiful smile.
